Develop an Intimate Relationship with God Through Bible Journaling

Uncategorized Dec 05, 2024

Have you ever imagined sitting down with Jesus, just the two of you, sharing a quiet moment together? You ask Him to speak to you, and as He does, you treasure every word. You might even grab a pen and jot down what He says, so you’ll never forget it.

That’s what Bible journaling feels like for me—a sacred time to sit with Jesus, slow down, and let His Word come alive. It’s an invitation to deepen our relationship with Him by lingering in His truth and recording what He’s speaking to our hearts.

For busy Christian women like us, life can feel overwhelming. Between work, family, church, and everything else, it’s easy to rush through our quiet time—or even skip it altogether. But Bible journaling offers us a way to slow down, focus, and truly encounter God in His Word.

The Gift of Slowing Down

We live in a world that glorifies speed and productivity. But when it comes to our relationship with God, He invites us to a different pace:

"You will seek me and you will find me if you seek me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13).

When we open our Bibles and grab our journals, we’re saying, “Lord, I’m here to seek You with my whole heart.” Bible journaling helps us pause and reflect. Instead of rushing through a chapter, we ask the Holy Spirit to highlight a verse or truth that speaks directly to us.

For example, one morning I was reading Psalm 23, a passage I thought I knew by heart. But as I paused and really thought about what I was reading, the phrase He restores my soul” jumped off the page. I wrote it down, and as I did, I realized how desperately I needed that restoration. It felt like God was wrapping me in His arms, whispering, I see you. I know you’re tired. Let me restore you.

In that moment, I wasn’t just reading the Bible—I was hearing God’s voice, and it changed my day.

Facing Life's Challenges

As women, we carry a lot on our shoulders. We want to spend time with God, but distractions are everywhere: the kids need us, the laundry is piling up, the notifications on our phones won’t stop.

Bible journaling helps us push past the chaos. When we open our journals, we’re creating space to focus on what truly matters. It’s not about having hours of uninterrupted time or making something picture-perfect—it’s about showing up and letting God speak to us through His Word.

I remember a friend telling me how Bible journaling helped her through one of the busiest seasons of her life. She was a new mom, overwhelmed and sleep-deprived, but she kept her Bible and journal on the kitchen counter. Even a quick five minutes here and there became opportunities to meet with God. She wrote down short prayers, reflected on a single verse, and found peace in the middle of the chaos.

Why Writing It Down Matters

Have you ever experienced a moment where God revealed something beautiful to you—and then forgot it by the end of the day? I have, and it’s why I always grab my pen during quiet time.

When we journal, we’re creating a record of what the God of the Universe has spoken to us. It’s a way of treasuring those moments and making sure we don’t lose them.

Looking back through my journal is one of my favorite things to do. I can see how God has been faithful, how He’s answered prayers, and how He’s grown me through His Word. It reminds me that even when life feels uncertain, He is constant.

Where to Start

If you’ve never tried Bible journaling, I’d love to invite you to start. It doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are a few simple steps:

  1. Find a quiet space: Even if it’s just a corner of your home for 10 minutes.
  2. Pray for guidance: Ask God to meet you in His Word and show you what He wants you to see.
  3. Choose a passage: It can be a verse from a devotional, a psalm, or even Jeremiah 29:13.
  4. Write and reflect: Jot down a verse, a thought, or a prayer.
  5. Be creative, if you want: Add color, sketches, or anything that helps you connect with the Scripture.

Bible journaling isn’t just about writing and creating art on thin paper; it’s about slowing down, listening, and encountering the living God. It’s about treasuring His words, letting them transform your heart, and drawing closer to Him each day.

So grab your Bible and a journal. Sit down as if you’re meeting with Jesus, because you are. He’s waiting to speak to you, to open your eyes to His truth, and to draw you into a deeper relationship with Him.

And as you write down the words He whispers to your heart, you’ll find yourself seeking Him—and finding Him—with all your heart.
